Choose critical loads before sizing a home UPS

UPS sizing begins with a deliberate critical-load boundary. A smaller, known load is easier to keep online and easier to shut down safely than an entire room of equipment.

Start with the outcome, not every plug

Write down the smallest set of devices that preserves the outcome you care about. A short remote-work outage may need only modem, router, and laptop power. A storage protection path may need network access plus the NAS long enough for a controlled shutdown.

Exclude displays, printers, chargers, and entertainment equipment unless they genuinely change the outcome. This keeps the required stored energy tied to a decision rather than to every socket in a room.

Continuous watts and startup behavior are separate checks
